Round 4 vs Mullewa

May 18, 2017

Round 4 V Mullewa @ Purcher International Oval
13th May 2017

A six goal to two third term was the catalyst for Mullewa’s 17.15 (117) to 14.11 (95) win over Northampton at Purcher International Stadium on Saturday night.

A healthy home crowd enjoyed a matched that was evenly contested for all but its entirety, the Saints putting on an impressive display with a five minute patch of football that threatened to blow the game wide open early in the third term. But to Northampton’s credit they were able to pull themselves back into the contest, just never quite get within reach of victory.

The Rams started brightly and held an 11 point lead at quarter time in a highly skilled showing from both sides. Mullewa’s Dale Wallam appeared to kick start the visitors in the second term on his way to eight majors, as they grabbed a narrow lead by the main break.
That momentum continued into the third term as Mullewa took hold of the Rams who, far from playing poorly, could not quite match the Saints pinpoint accuracy.
But they were able to halt Mullewa’s run, which has so often taken the game away from opposition’s hands, and grind their way back into the match.
Northampton’s Gavin Mallard continued to repel Mullewa from half back and collected plenty of his own ball, as Kayle Cripps, Nathaniel Mourambine, Craig Lucas and Beau Gleghorn set about putting scoreboard pressure back on the Saints.

Rams faithful held hope until late in the final term as the last quarter went goal for goal for long periods, with Mullewa unable to build a comfortable lead as Northampton battled to overtake them. The impressive work of Mullewa’s Leedham Papertalk and Chris Wall kept the Rams at bay for long enough to see Mullewa record their third win from as many matched in 2017.

Northampton head to the bye 2-2 with reigning premiers Towns awaiting them at Wonthella on May 27th.
