Round 2 V Chapman Valley @ Purcher International Stadium
29th April 2017
Northampton have produced one of their strongest starts to a season in recent GNFL history following a powerful 34 point victory over arch rivals Chapman Valley on Saturday night. The Rams powered home in the final term booting eight goals to three to run over a resilient Valley side, winning 15.14 (104) to 10.10 (70), led largely by forward Nathaniel Mourambine.
Mourambine produced one of his finest displays in the green and gold, booting five goals and regularly bobbing up with the ball and taking on ruck duties for periods of the match as well. The win takes Northampton to the top of the premiership table alongside Mullewa who both sit 2-0.
Chapman Valley kicked with a strong breeze in the first term and held a narrow lead at quarter time, and the match was well and truly in the balance right until final break when Northampton held just a one goal lead, inaccuracy again keeping the Royals in the game. But as they had done so the previous week to Rovers, the Rams ran riot in the final term with superior fitness and a much more accurate showing in front of goal.
Arguably the highlight of the match was Ethan Chick’s first league goal on debut, though it was not his nous in front of goal but his ability to repeatedly win contested ball and keep his feet at the contest that would have most impressed Coach Kingsley Smith. Taylor Green also produced his finest performance since re-joining the club this season, and received good support from a strong Rams half back line in Smith, Tyler Hall and Grady Tomelty.
Northampton face perhaps the biggest challenge yet when they tackle Brigades at GBSC Sports Park on Saturday, who will be looking to rebound after a close loss to Mullewa in their opening match last weekend.
