Round 1 V Rovers – Game Write Up

April 25, 2017

Round 1 V Rovers @ Greenough Oval.
24th April 2017

Northampton have started their 2017 GNFL campaign in sizzling fashion with a convincing 16.19 (115) to 7.11 (53) win over Rovers at Greenough Oval on Saturday.
The Round One clash was expected to be evenly contested by the two clubs, both looking to push for top four berths after strong pre-seasons, and the first quarter showed as much as neither side was able to grab an early ascendancy.

The Rams held a slender two point lead at the first break, though swift ball movement and clean skills in transition saw them assert their authority late in the second term as forwards Nathaniel Mourambine and Trent Simpson began outgunning their opponents. But for all the Rams dominance they could show just a 15 point lead at the main break as inaccuracy cruelled their chances.

First year Coach Kingsley Smith implored his charges to start well after the main break, and that they did as they burst out of the blocks regularly peppering the scoreboard and winning the ball all over the ground, though were still unable to kick straight and stretch the game beyond doubt. This left the door marginally ajar for the Demons heading into the final term being 27 points down despite having only half as many scoring shots.
However the last quarter was one way traffic as Northampton’s strenuous pre-season work began to shine as they ran all over Rovers with superior fitness and skill, dominating scoring in the final term and finishing with a 62 point victory.

Mourambine and Simpson finished with four goals apiece while fellow forward Craig Lucas booted three, but it was arguably the Rams defence of Smith, Tyler Hall, debutant Anthony McKay and new skipper Ryan Eyre that stood tallest in an impressive display that will concern most clubs forward lines.
Northampton next face traditional rivals Chapman Valley on Saturday night as they strive to consolidate top spot.
